Professor Dominic Hegarty (Pain Relief Ireland) spoke with Lottie Ryan on the Jennifer Zamparelli on 2FM as part of the Pain Awareness Month.
Pain Awareness Month is a global campaign to raise awareness of chronic pain during the month of September. Lottie spoke with chronic pain sufferer Sharon and Professor Hegarty, a Consultant in Pain Management & Neuromodulation at the Mater Private Hospital in Cork (Clinical Director Pain Relief Ireland). In a wide ranging interview, he discusses the diagnostic and management dilemma facing patients and GP's when they try and manage chronic pain such as fibromyalgia, chronic lower back pain and headaches.
Prof. Hegarty highlighted the importance of having open discussions on the national airways if the stigma of chronic is to be address. “Patients need to be shown that there is light at the end of the chronic pain tunnel” says Prof. Hegarty, “We need to shine a light on all aspects of pain management to ensure that individuals realise that there are options out there for a better quality of life”.
"We need to shine a light on all aspects of pain management to ensure that individuals realise that there are options out there for a better quality of life”.
Pain Relief Ireland understands that 1 in 5 individuals suffer chronic pain every day and this has an enormous impact many aspects and has the capacity to destroy all joy, all responsibility, and all motivation for millions across Europe.
Pain Relief Ireland Supports Pain Awareness Month in GP practises, Pharmacy practise, the emergency room, in the workplace and amongst the public. Indeed, the Declaration of Montreal 2010 considers access to pain management a fundamental right. Pain Relief Ireland continues to promote collective actions by society to organise itself to reduce the pain and the suffering of our community.
